On Saturday, June 7th PPI-SA hosted its 23rd City Wide Tournament at Hoy Park in downtown Durban. The event was an incredible success with over 350 participants from the communities of Durban City, Lamontville, Molweni, Umlazi, Waterloo, and Wentworth in attendance for a beautiful day of basketball. The City Wide Tournament is held twice a year in both June and October. The June event is always a special day because kids do not play with their school teams but instead are matched with kids from different communities to help bridge divides. While there was initially a heavy dose of hesitancy, by the end of the day when asked as a large group who made a new friend today, nearly every youth raised their hand. It was an incredibly powerful moment for players, coaches and volunteers alike.

PPI-SA would like to give a special thank you to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the Sports for Social Change Network (SSCN) and the South African National Lottery without whom the City Wide Tournament would not have been possible!

If you didn’t have a chance to attend, don’t worry we have you covered with a Social Media re-cap. If you don’t already, follow PPI-SA on facebook!
